MPIGI - Drama unfolded in Mpigi district's second council meeting after a section of councilLors blocked the appointment of a member to the district executive committee, citing misconduct and integrity issues.

At the meeting on Tuesday, June 16th, Simon Peter Kawuki, the newly elected district chairperson, was sworn in together with other councillors. He was expected to unveil names of people he nominated to take up the vacant positions of vice chairperson and three executive committee members.

Kawuki, who won the race as a NUP candidate, appointed NRM's Frank Kawooya Vicky as his vice chairperson, and his nomination was seconded by both the NRM and NUP councillors, and was later sworn in to that office by the District Chief Administrative Officer, Edith Nabayego.

On Tuesday at the first council meeting presided over by the district speaker, Patrick Katende, the district chairperson (Kawuki ) also nominated Ronald Kaggwa Kibirige, who served as the former district council speaker, during the previous regime, to be his Secretary of Finance, Planning, and Administration, while Cossy Nakabazi, the female councillor for Buwama town council, was also nominated as Secretary of Production.

These were successfully approved by the council and eventually sworn in to their respective offices.

Drama, however, ensued when the chairperson nominated the name of Alex Mwanje, the male councillor representing Kayabwe Town Council at Mpigi district local government, to the position of Secretary for Education and Health.

A section of councillors led by Joseph Ssempijja, the male councillor representing Buwama Town Council at Mpigi district local government, raised a motion of objection to Mwanje's nomination on grounds of integrity and misconduct.

“Mr Speaker, sir, I rise on the point of objection to the nomination of Hon Alex Mwanje as the Secretary of Education and Health.”

Ssempijja argued that the nominee has integrity issues regarding the mishandling of funds belonging to a certain SACCO, a case that is still pending in the office of the district commercial officer.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mwanje said he was shocked by his rejection and said this is politics and has nothing to do with any of the reasons raised by Councillor Ssempija to object to his nomination.
