ARUA - The Widow of the slain former Arua Municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Abiriga has been duly nominated for the position of LC1 Chairperson, Anyafio Golf Cell.
The vibrant legislator was shot dead on June 8 2018, in Kawanda near Kampala. The assassins also gunned down his driver in the same attack, a few meters from Abiriga's residence.
Amina Sijali Abiriga, nominated on Friday, July 17, at OPM grounds in Arua City central division, says that her political camp asked for her leadership for the LC1 chairperson.
Sijali is contesting as an independent candidate against the incumbent Joyce Dodo of the National Resistance Movement NRM who has been in power since 2002.
After nomination, Sijali, who is the current Village Health Team VHT Officer in Anyafio Golf Cell, said her main focus is on leadership of accountability, transparency and development.

She cited poor service delivery and lack of information to the residents on government programs designed to benefit the people.
Other issues she wants government to address include support to school dropouts through skilling and establishment of tailoring machines, motor vehicle mechanics, weaving, knitting and supporting women's groups with capital and procuring motorcycles for boda boda groups in the Anyafio Golf Cell, where the President resides at the presidential lodge as a benefit to the community that hosts the head of state.
Michael Candia, the nominee of Sijali, says his candidate has raised pertinent issues that need to be addressed. He said the home of the late Abiriga is near the state lodge, but they have not seen the benefit of the presence of the President coming to Arua in their village.
He said the services have been selective in Anyafio Golf Cell, a reason they need change.
Walter Butele, a resident of Anyafio Golf Cell, said his candidate is the wife of a hero who died in government, the late Ibrahim Abiriga. He said the government should even appoint the wife to a better position because they are supporting the wife of Abiriga.
The Nomination exercise will be concluded on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
