KIKUUBE - The Kikuube district by-election to fill the LCV Position which fell vacant following the death of district boss Peter Banura has been postponed from the earlier date of 10th June to 18th of the same month.

Banura, the son of Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza died on April 4, 2026, after he was hit by a fast-moving commuter taxi in Butyamba-Kamusunsi village, Kiziranfumbi town council, on Hoima-Fort Road.

According to the communication that was issued on May 15 and signed by Chairman Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the election previously set for Wednesday, 10th, had been rescheduled to Thursday, June 18.

He noted that the adjournment followed feedback which was received during the stakeholders meeting convened by the commission on April 27.

“The by-election is necessitated by the untimely death of incumbent district Chairperson Peter Banura Araali, who passed away in an accident. At the time of his passing on, he was also district chairperson elect,” Byamukama said.

Course of postponement

During the stakeholders meeting, Kikuube district leaders asked the electoral commission to reschedule the date for the by-election, saying that the polling date of June April 10 2026, was not favourable to different parties.

Kikuube district vice Chairman Vicente Opio said June 11 every year is a day Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom subjects celebrate Omukama of Bunyoro Dr Solomon Gafabusa’s coronation anniversary (Empango) at Karuzika Palace in Hoima city.

He noted that the celebrations always start on June 8, and the day is important to people of Bunyoro, including Kikuube district, and that there is fear that many will miss elections while attending the celebration.
