Kalangala byelection: EC finalises preparations for Woman MP nominations

KALANGALA - The Electoral Commission in Kalangala has finalised preparations ahead of nominations for the Woman Member of Parliament seat in the forthcoming by-election scheduled for June 24, 2026.

According to the roadmap, the Commission has concluded the display of voters’ registers, a process that ran for 10 days.

The seat fell vacant following the death of the incumbent and winner of the 2026 general elections, Hellen Nakimuli, who died during surgery.

Speaking to the press at the EC offices in Kizzi village, Kalangala town council, returning officer Ronald Agaba said nominations, in line with the guidelines, will be conducted over two days starting tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11, from 9am to 5pm.

“No candidate will be allowed to access nomination grounds, which are Kalangala district headquarters main hall with a procession either of vehicles or supporters,” says Agaba.

He further stated that each candidate will be allowed a maximum of two vehicles, carrying not more than 10 people.

“The most crucial are the person who will propose you and the seconder, among other requirements include being a Ugandan registered in the voters register and, in that district or constituency where you cast your vote from,” he added.

He also noted that candidates must have paid sh3 million to the bank, possess a minimum S6 level of education, and be of sound mind.

Currently, attention is focused on a contest between the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the National Unity Platform (NUP), with both parties expressing confidence in winning the seat.

The race currently has four aspirants pending confirmation after nominations, after which the Electoral Commission will announce those who meet the requirements to contest for the Kalangala Woman MP seat.
