The deputy chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Hajjat Aisha Lubega, has urged Ugandans to take the forthcoming village elections seriously to ensure effective service delivery and security at the grassroots.
“We have a variety of political parties lining up candidates in the LC (local council) elections. I advise you to choose the best for the good of your village,” Lubega, who doubles as the commissioner in charge of the Central South region, said on Tuesday.
She delivered the call during a regional Electoral Commission evaluation conference at Brovad Hotel in Masaka City.
The one-week registration period ended last Friday, followed by the display of the village (LC1) voters' register.
Nomination of candidates for village chairpersons will take place at the sub-county, town or division headquarters from Wednesday (July 15) until Sunday (July 19).
Campaigns will begin on July 20 and end on July 27, the eve of polling day.
Polling will be done by lining up in the 71,214 villages across the country. Declaration of the winners will be followed by the nomination and approval of LC1 executives by the village council meetings.
“We have crucial programmes rolling out in our respective villages. We need serious and committed leaders who will uplift our communities," said Lubega.
She cautioned Electoral Commission staff deployed to manage the elections to ensure that the voters who will participate will be the ones on the register.
Harriet Kashagire, the regional returning officer in charge of Central South region, assured that the village elections will be transparent.
