ELECTION PETITION
The High Court in Uganda's western district of Rukungiri has granted Fred Turyamuhweza Tumuheirwe leave to withdraw his parliamentary election petition challenging the victory of Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi in January's Rujumbura County race.
Muhwezi, contesting on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket in the January 15 parliamentary elections, was declared winner with 25,007 votes.
He defeated People's Front for Freedom (PFF) party candidate Tumuheirwe, who was second with 23,307 votes.
Unsatisfied with the election outcome, Tumuheirwe petitioned the Rukungiri High Court on April 1 challenging the declaration of Muhwezi as the winner.
Three months on, the matter came up for final disposal on Tuesday (July 7) before Lady Justice Susan Kanyange.
The judge granted the petitioner leave to withdraw his petition No. 005 of 2026: Tumuheirwe Fred Turyamuhweza versus Muhwezi Jim Katugugu and Electoral Commission (EC).
This was in the presence Edgar Ayebazibwe and Kenneth Junior Ainamaani, the respective lawyers of Muhwezi and the EC.
It was also in the absence of the applicant's lawyer and the parties.
"Costs are hereby granted to the second respondent [EC]," ordered Judge Kanyange.
