KAMPALA - Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) kicked off his bid for Uganda's presidency by launching his campaigns in Kampala on Tuesday (September 30).
To begin with, the former army commander addressed his first rally at Kawempe ku Ttaano playground.
There, he said, the population of Kampala is likely to rise to 16 million in a few years to come, yet the government, according to him, has done little as far as planning is concerned.
He said that, unlike in villages, urban dwellers must buy everything, yet with low disposable income.

Muntu, who is running for president for a second time, claimed to have severally turned down a ministerial job offer from his former boss, President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who is seeking re-election.
"I prefer to be in leadership with functioning institutions that are corruption-free," he said.
Muntu said he is the right choice for Uganda's top job. He claimed rare minerals were recently discovered in Busoga and other parts of the country that can generate billions of money, adding that mineral wealth can only be better managed by a person like him.
The ANT frontrunner rooted for discipline amongst the opposition supporters and urged the government to resort to the rule of law instead of incarcerating people without trial.

One of the supporters of Rtd. Gen. Mugisha Muntu could not hide his excitement after seeing him on Tuesday.
On his first day on the campaign trail, Muntu then stepped out of his car and conducted door-to-door campaigning in Kisenyi, a city slum, in Kampala Central Division.
He was not put off by the darkening clouds high above, signs of approaching rain.
While at it, he met a self-confessed supporter of President Yoweri Museveni, who was clad in an NRM T-shirt. In a respectful approach, Michael Bayinda tasked Muntu with explaining to him why he wants to unseat the man who, many years ago, gave him a platform to serve as army commander.
Bayinda also commended the ANT flagbearer for being the first presidential candidate ever to visit them in their ghetto area to physically witness their living conditions.
Slaloming through tight corridors, Muntu greeted Kisenyi residents and even allowed some to take selfies with him.
Before setting off earlier on Tuesday, he had addressed reporters, during which he had said young people "need to follow more logic than emotion" as they elect their new leaders.

"They have to choose. Life is about choices. You make the right choices, you get good fruits out of the choices you make. You make the wrong choices, you groan. There are no two ways about that," said the former army chief.
Muntu was also apologetic about the burden the ongoing campaigns are having on Ugandan road traffic, with each one of the eight candidates having their own security detail wherever they go.
"We are adding on the already burden on the people who move by public roads... we apologise for that.
"But this period of four months, we hope that they [public] will be able to bear with us and they also hope that anybody who takes over is going to cause that to cease," he said.
"We hope those who are on our security detail will be coordinating with traffic [police] so that it doesn't cause us a lot of inconvenience."
Muntu is vying for the Ugandan presidency alongside seven other candidates, including the incumbent, President Museveni of NRM.
