2026 general election: What Museveni told voters in Obongi, Moyo

“We have a very strong army and other security institutions which have been able to guard peace together with united defence and united politics of the country. That is how Uganda is like an island of peace in this part of the world. You can see people from other countries are here as refugees,” he said.

Before President Yoweri Museveni took a two-day break from the campaign trail, he visited the districts of Obongi and Moyo to woo voters ahead of the 2026 general election.

Museveni, who is seeking his seventh consecutive presidential term next year, is standing on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.

He held his first campaign rally on October 17, 2025, at Lionga Boma Grounds in Obongi Town Council, and the second at Celecelea Stadium in Moyo.

At both campaign events, he arrived standing through a car sunroof, flashing a thumbs-up sign and smiling at thousands of his supporters who braved the scorching sun to listen to him.

He was dressed in black trousers, a long-sleeved yellow shirt, and his trademark hat.

In Obongi, Museveni noted that the NRM’s ideology of unity, patriotism, and Pan-Africanism has helped unite Uganda’s politics while building institutions such as the army, which comprises Ugandans from across the country.

“We have a very strong army and other security institutions which have been able to guard peace together with united defence and united politics of the country. That is how Uganda is like an island of peace in this part of the world. You can see people from other countries are here as refugees,” he said.

He told the people of Obongi that when he first visited their area in 1979, he observed their isolation and understood their challenges.

“That is why, when we entered government, we worked to create Obongi district so you could have your own corner,” he told the crowd at Lionga Boma Grounds.

He revealed that his NRM-led government has already secured a loan from the World Bank to extend electricity to the area.

“We are also working on the road network so that Obongi will no longer be cut off. But beyond infrastructure, I want to see wealth in every home. That’s why the government will buy equipment and dig fish ponds for the people, then hand them over,” Museveni said.

The President noted that fish farming is highly profitable, adding that from one acre, he earns over sh100m on his model farm in the Lango sub-region.

He said all they need from the people is to support NRM, and they will do the rest.

At Celecelea Stadium, Museveni said that too many people were still working only for the stomach, which he said was not enough.

“Every Ugandan must build a stable livelihood. In Adjumani, our skilling hub has already trained over 600 youth. We are now expanding and funding youth SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations),” he said.

He added that the government is upgrading roads such as the Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo Road to open up markets.

He promised that “electricity is soon reaching” Otce and Laropi sub-counties.

“This region is rich, and our plan is to turn the Nile Valley into a chain of fish ponds,” he said.

He noted that through the Parish Development Model (PDM) programme, Moyo received sh14.1b, supporting over 14,000 households.

“Voting for the ‘old man with the hat’ and the NRM is a strategic choice, one that protects Uganda and its future,” he told the people of Moyo.

President Museveni will resume his political campaigns on Monday, October 20, 2025, in the districts of Adjumani and Amuru.
