A five-day women’s health camp has drawn hundreds from various parts of the Lango region.
The camp featured screenings at different health facilities in Lira city. A team of renowned gynaecologists, medical doctors and nurses from across the country gathered in Lira city for the exercise, which officially began on Monday and will conclude on Friday.
By 7:00am on Monday, August 5, 2024, over 500 women had assembled at the old Akii Bua Stadium in Lira City, patiently awaiting essential health services.
The camp was organised in response to the community’s outcry for a dedicated health initiative addressing the unique challenges faced by women in the area.
Services being offered at the health camp include surgery (for conditions like cancers, fibroids, fistula, and hernia), screenings (including HIV, diabetes, high blood pressure, cervical and breast cancer, mammography and ultrasonography), family planning, nutrition and wellness, mental health support, infertility management, immunization, and child care.

Alex Owera, a political assistant to health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, expressed happiness that she had come to assist the people of Lango. He emphasized the camp’s importance, noting that good health enables individuals to work and overcome poverty.
Rose Akello, the chairperson Women's League of the former Ngetta sub-county, observed that Aceng, who is also the Lira city woman legislator, is a heroine for organising the camp.
Beatrice Odongo from Bata town council in Dokolo district expressed gratitude to Aceng for the initiative, which is being done in conjunction with the MUlago Specialised women's Hospital and the Uganda Cancer Institute, among others.
