Why ex-spy chief Gen. Birungi was court martialed, remanded

Prior to his arrest in June 2025, the CDF, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, relieved Birungi of his position as commander of the UPDF Mountain Infantry Division and redeployed him to Burundi as Uganda’s Defence Attaché and Military Adviser. His arrest followed a high-level inquiry led by Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding that allegedly uncovered widespread misconduct and irregularities within the UPDF, including falsified intelligence and misuse of resources.
