The US Ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, has said that the United States is exploring new ways to strengthen its partnership with Uganda.

“We are looking at different ways to continue to cooperate, including supporting immigration protections, supporting the fight against fraud, and working together to ensure security for both countries,” Popp said.

He made the remarks on Monday, July 14, while briefing invited journalists in Kampala on the topic of the “US Visa Policy to Deter Illegal Migration,” alongside other officials from the US Embassy.

“We are working together (with Uganda) in many different areas, including airspace and fighting fraud,” he said, noting that both countries had recently collaborated to successfully contain the 2025 Ebola outbreak in Uganda.

“We continue to work in other areas, supporting commercial opportunities and companies doing business in both nations. In May, we had a record number of Ugandan companies seeking business opportunities in the United States, and we have American businesses coming here,” Popp added.

Without disclosing details of ongoing diplomatic engagements, the ambassador emphasised: “We talk to our colleagues in the Ugandan government on a daily basis on a whole range of topics.”

Visa validity changes

Popp also revealed that non-immigrant visa validity for nationals of certain countries, including Uganda, had changed as of July 8, 2025.

“Most visas for Ugandan citizens are for single entry and will be valid for three months. This aligns with Ugandan visas for US citizens travelling on business and tourist visas,” he explained.

Further details regarding the US visa validity changes will appear in Tuesday’s New Vision newspaper. The electronic version can be accessed here.
