Govt gives Serere sub-county residents freehold land titles

Bogere said the freehold land titles are being given to residents of Kyere, Olio and Atiira sub-counties whose lands were surveyed previously by the Systematic Land Adjudication and Certification (SLAAC) in Serere, Soroti and Bukedea districts.

The lands ministry has officially launched the distribution of freehold land titles to the community members of the three sub-counties in Serere district. The initiative is expected to protect landowners’ rights, reduce land disputes and improve access to credit for residents.

Michael Ronald Bogere, the ministry records officer at the Soroti Zonal Office, on December 15, 2025, said this is a major step toward strengthening land security and promoting sustainable development in the area.

The launch was held at Kyere sub-county Headquarters and attracted different stakeholders from both the sub-county and at the district.

Bogere said the freehold land titles are being given to residents of Kyere, Olio and Atiira sub-counties whose lands were surveyed previously by the Systematic Land Adjudication and Certification (SLAAC) in Serere, Soroti and Bukedea districts.

He added that issuing freehold titles will empower local communities by giving them legally recognised ownership of their land, revealing that securing land tenure is essential for economic growth and social stability, and with these titles, residents can invest confidently in their land and pass it on to future generations.

On the other hand, Serere Resident District Commissioner (RDC) John Stephen Ekoom warned the residents against dealing with strangers who are not officials from the ministry and sub-county.

Meanwhile, Serere county Member of Parliament Emmanuel Omoding urged the beneficiaries to help mobilise others to also embrace the titling of their lands.

Kyere LC3 chairperson John Esadu commended the Government for prioritising rural communities and urged beneficiaries to safeguard their titles.

Kyere senior assistant chief administrative officer Sarah Inyaru welcomes the initiative, describing it as timely and transformative for farmers and households who have long occupied land without formal documentation.

Some of the residents who received the freehold land titles expressed appreciation, saying the move will help resolve boundary disputes and open opportunities for development and financial support.
