UPDF tightens screening standards as recruitment exercise begins at Kololo

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has tightened screening requirements as its physical recruitment exercise begins at Kololo Airstrip, warning applicants against forgery and outlining strict physical, medical and academic standards.
Addressing shortlisted candidates from Kampala Central and Makindye Division on Monday (August 10), one of the facilitators, Captain David Kamya, said the military is seeking young, energetic and patriotic Ugandans to join its ranks as regular soldiers and professionals.

Candidates applying under professional categories must have obtained a minimum of two principal passes in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or equivalent qualifications in a single sitting.

To ensure transparency and authenticity, candidates reporting to Kololo Airstrip were instructed to present a handwritten application endorsed and stamped by local leaders, including LC1, LC2, LC3 and GISO or DISO officials.
Candidates must also present original academic documents alongside certified photocopies and a valid National Identity Card or National Identification Number (NIN).
"Forgery is prohibited, and you are aware about that. It is criminal. If we get you, you will be prosecuted in courts of law," Capt. Kamya cautioned.
Highlighting the military's ongoing professionalisation drive, Capt. Kamya said the UPDF maintains zero tolerance for compromised health standards or physical unfitness.
Candidates will undergo a multi-stage screening process involving comprehensive medical check-ups and rigorous physical endurance tests, including timed runs.
He said the current recruitment phase focuses on processing candidates shortlisted from Kampala Central and Makindye Division before expanding to other designated divisions across the country.
The exercise at Kololo will last about four days before moving to another area, according to Capt. Kamya.
