TEREGO - Several road users along the Kijomoro-Katrini Road were delayed for more than two hours on Tuesday (June 16) after the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) temporarily blockaded the road to safely detonate at least 12 stray bombs.

The ordinances are believed to have been abandoned during Uganda's turbulent period in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A resident of Oguvu village in Terego district, Nelson Akuma, said several traders returning from Yazea Market in Kijomoro subcounty, Maracha district, together with other road users, were forced to find alternative ways to cope with the disruption caused by the exercise.

Arua One FM reported that four of the bombs were handed over to security officials in Katrini subcounty by a resident of Wandi trading centre in Terego district, while others were collected from various districts.

The four explosives from Wandi trading centre were reportedly discovered underground during excavation work for the foundation of a house.

The detonation exercise was completed safely at about 6:30 pm.

UPDF personnel who conducted the operation appealed to communities to report any suspicious objects discovered in their areas.

This was the second time the UPDF had carried out a controlled detonation of explosives in the area.
