Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been arrested from his home in Rubaga division today (June 15) morning.
Before his arrest, Lukwago posted on his X account indicating that operatives moving in two drones had surrounded his home. Sources said Lukwago declined to open his gate, prompting the operatives to scale up his fence and arrest him.
Details about the cause of Lukwago's arrest remained scanty by the time of filing this story. When journalists asked police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma during a weekly press briefing at Naguru in Kampala about the cause of Lukwago's arrest, Kituuma said he did not have the details.
However, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in a tweet, confirmed the arrest of Lukwago. But Kainerugaba neither revealed the cause of the arrest nor gave any further details.
Lukwago is one of the defence lawyers of four-time presidential candidate Kizza Besigye and his aide, Obeid Lutale, who are jointly charged with treason and misprision of treason alongside Capt. Denish Oyaa Oola of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) Armoured Brigade.
Other members of the defence team include Martha Karua, Ernest Kalibbala, Fred Mpanga, Bayern Turinawe, Farouk Kamulegeya, Abubakkar Ssekanjako, Kato Tumusiime and Simon Nsubuga.
The prosecution team comprises Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Thomas Jatiko and Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka.
