NAMUTUMBA - Two female passengers lost their lives, and several others sustained critical injuries in a fatal road crash along the Iganga-Mbale highway in Namutumba district.

The crash occurred on March 25, 2025, at Mazuba and involved a Tata lorry (Reg. No. UBQ 901S) belonging to BIDCO and a Time Keeper company taxi (Reg. No. UBJ 358P).

Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo said both vehicles were heading towards Mbale when the taxi driver attempted to overtake the truck at high speed.

“Unfortunately, he encountered an oncoming vehicle, forcing him to swerve back abruptly. In the process, he rammed into the rear of the truck, ripping off the taxi’s roof,” Kafayo said.

He added, “Two female passengers died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to hospitals in Mbale and Iganga for emergency treatment.”

Police have since recorded witness statements and transported the bodies to Iganga Hospital for postmortem.

Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving by the taxi driver was the primary cause of the accident. Authorities have urged motorists to observe traffic regulations, particularly on highways, to prevent further tragedies.
