Trial of Serere aggravated defilement suspect starts after seven years
Prosecution alleges that Amolo committed the offence on the fateful day when the girl had gone with other children to collect broom grass from a bushy garden at Aswii Landing Site.

The High Court in Soroti has commenced hearing an aggravated defilement case against a fisherman accused of defiling a six-year-old pupil at Aswii Landing Site in Serere District, seven years after his arrest without trial.
Denis Amolo, a fisherman who used to specialise in catching silver fish on Lake Kyoga, is accused of defiling the primary one pupil.
It is alleged that Amolo defiled the girl on August 1, 2019, when he was 35 years old. Amolo, who is now 42 years old, has been on remand since then.
Prosecution alleges that Amolo committed the offence on the fateful day when the girl had gone with other children to collect broom grass from a bushy garden at Aswii Landing Site.
The victim, now 13, was allegedly defiled in the presence of her friend, who was four years old then.
Testifying before High Court Judge Boniface Wamala on Wednesday (August 12), the victim's mother told court that her daughter returned home crying and bleeding from her private parts.
“Blood was oozing from her private parts. Unable to speak to me, her colleague informed me that the accused, now in the dock, had defiled her,” the mother told court.
She said she reported the matter to the Local Council (LC) 2 chairperson, who later teamed up with the area LC1 chairperson, leading to Amolo's arrest the following morning.
According to the mother, Amolo initially denied the allegations but later admitted having had sexual intercourse with the child while being transported on a motorcycle to Serere Central Police Station.
“At first he was denying, but when he was put on the motorbike to Serere Central Police, he pleaded to stop, to which police agreed. He admitted sleeping with my daughter and requested that the matter be settled at home and not at police,” she testified.

The mother said Amolo's request was rejected and he was taken to the police station, while the child was rushed to Serere Health Centre IV for medical examination.
She told court that the medical examination confirmed that the child had been defiled.
The mother further told court that the incident has had a lasting impact on her daughter and asked the court to ensure that justice is served.
Prosecution has lined up four witnesses, including a police officer who handled the crime scene, to testify in the case. The case was adjourned to August 17 for further hearing.
According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report, 10,492 defilement cases were reported across the country in 2025, representing a 14.8 percent decline from the 12,312 cases reported in 2024.
Of the cases reported in 2025, a total of 7,019 cases were classified as simple defilement, while 3,473 cases were recorded as aggravated defilement.
She told court that the medical examination confirmed that the child had been defiled.
The mother further told court that the incident has had a lasting impact on her daughter and asked the court to ensure that justice is served.
