MITOOMA - The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mitooma District has commenced hearing a shocking child torture case in which a woman is accused of forcing her nine-year-old stepson to swallow dozens of sewing needles.
The accused, Juliet Tushabomwe, 45, appeared before Mitooma Chief Magistrate Gibson Muhangi as the prosecution, led by the district State Attorney Caroline Keshuubi, presented seven witnesses.
During the hearing, court listened to testimony from four witnesses, including the victim, Samuel Akamumpa.
Samuel told court that while living with his stepmother at Rweibaare II Cell, Kyanziire Parish, Kashenshero Sub-county in Mitooma District, the accused allegedly wrapped sewing needles in paper and forced him to swallow them on different occasions.
The boy testified that after repeatedly swallowing the objects, he developed severe stomach pain and persistent discomfort, forcing his aunt, Eunice Birungi, to seek medical attention.
Court heard that the child was first examined at Ishaka Adventist Hospital, where medical personnel discovered an unusual condition and referred him to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for specialised treatment and surgery.

“We were shocked by the number of needles found in the child’s stomach. His condition required urgent referral for an operation,” she said.
According to prosecution, investigations began after medical findings raised suspicion that the child had been deliberately subjected to torture. Police later arrested Tushabomwe and charged her in connection with the alleged acts.
Speaking to the Newvision outside court, the victim’s aunt, Eunice Birungi, welcomed the hearing and thanked court for giving the family an opportunity to present evidence.
“We appreciate the court process and remain hopeful that justice will be served for our child,” she said.
Chief Magistrate Muhangi adjourned the case to July 2, 2026, for further hearing and remanded the accused to custody until that date.
