Tooro royal clan sets up 21-member committee to select King Oyo successor

The Tooro kingdom Babiito royal clan has set up a 21-member committee to select the successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The committee was unveiled on August 29, 2026, at the Karuzika Royal Palace in Fort Portal.
Addressing the press on behalf of Omusuga Charles Kamurasi, the head of the royal family, Rev. Fr Charles Oyo, a member of the royal clan, said the committee, which will be chaired by Kamurasi, is mandated to choose a successor and present him to the other clans in Tooro.
"Members of the public should be informed that succession on the Tooro kingdom throne is a cultural ceremony performed by the Musuga (head of the royal family). In our meeting that was convened on August 28, a 21-member committee was selected to perform this function," Rev. Oyo said.

He said King Oyo’s body, upon arrival at Entebbe Airport, will be transported directly to the Karuzika Royal Palace without branching anywhere.
"According to our culture, the king only has one official palace; all other areas where the king stays are places of residence. In this regard, the palace is in Fort Portal," Oyo said.
He said the kingdom had also opened a bank account where all contributions towards the burial expenses should be deposited for purposes of accountability.
Oyo also revealed that they had selected tourism minister Col (Rtd) Tom Butiime to coordinate between the kingdom and the central government during the mourning period.
"Col (Rtd) Butiime will be the link between the kingdom and the central government; he will help to coordinate us," Rev. Oyo added.
While announcing the death of King Oyo, prime minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire said the late king had left behind a prince who would inherit the Tooro crown.
Rwomiire assured the people of Tooro that the succession of the monarchy remained secure.
“The continuity of the crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a prince as his heir,” the prime minister said.
However, the identity of the prince has not been made public.
Rwomiire said the heir’s identity would be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro kingdom.
