Teacher on the run after allegedly hitting student with hoe handle

A teacher at Zion Secondary School in Kirinda, Kiboga district, is on the run after allegedly assaulting a senior two student with a hoe handle, leaving the boy with a serious eye injury.
The victim, Arafat Ndiwalana, 17, a resident of Kyato village, Kasega parish, Kapeke sub-county in Kiboga district, was attacked on July 14 at around 8:30 am, according to Lameck Kigozi, the police publicist for Wamala Region.
Kigozi said the incident began when the student left his classroom without tucking in his uniform shirt and headed to the school gate, where he asked a teacher identified as Ken Sserwadda to let him out to get some pocket money.
Sserwadda ordered the boy to first tuck in his shirt, which he did, before the teacher instructed him to return to class. However, as the student walked back, he pulled his shirt out again in what police described as an act of protest.
The defiance angered Sserwadda, who picked up a hoe handle and followed the student into the classroom, according to Kigozi.
"Sserwadda hit the student with a hoe handle on the back and neck, inflicting injury on the boy's right eye and causing him to collapse," Kigozi said.
Other students in the classroom raised an alarm, attracting staff members who rushed to the victim's rescue.
The defiance angered Sserwadda, who picked up a hoe handle and followed the student into the classroom, according to Kigozi.
"Sserwadda hit the student with a hoe handle on the back and neck, inflicting injury on the boy's right eye and causing him to collapse," Kigozi said.
Other students in the classroom raised an alarm, attracting staff members who rushed to the victim's rescue.
The boy was given first aid, which stopped the bleeding, but he had already sustained a serious injury to his right eye. He was later rushed to a clinic for further medical management.
Once he had recovered sufficiently, the student reported the matter as a case of torture at Kiboga Police Station. Police say statements have since been recorded from the complainant and witnesses to the incident.
Sserwadda fled the school shortly after the assault, and efforts are underway to track him down and have him apprehended, Kigozi said.
Police have since appealed to teachers to exercise restraint when handling students, noting that some pupils behave in ways that are deliberately provocative.
"We appeal to teachers to always try to control their temper when dealing with students, some of whom are just stubborn and do things deliberately to provoke such actions from their unsuspecting teachers," Kigozi said, adding that teachers should at all times act professionally when administering punishment to students.
