One suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a senior six student at Seeta High School, Mbalala campus, in Mukono district.
On Tuesday, August 05th, 2025, the Deputy Police Spokesperson, Kampala Metropolitan Region, Luke Owoyesigyire, said,|" we are investigating an incident of suspected drowning, so far, we have the lifeguard in our custody, and we are yet to record his statement to tell us what his role was at the pool and how the student was found dead without his knowledge,” he said.
Police said the incident happened on the evening of Sunday, August 3, 2025.
Police identified the deceased as Kevin Nsamba, 21, who is said to have participated in a football match with his fellow students; thereafter, he and others ran towards the school swimming pool.
It is reported that apart from the football match, the students also had a "movie night" as part of the scheduled weekend entertainment.
Without revealing his particulars, Owoyesigyire said the suspect is a lifeguard who was assigned duties to oversee the students who use the swimming pool at the school.
According to the retrieved closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, police revealed that they have observed the place was under supervision of the lifeguard, who was also monitoring other students at the time when the 21-year-old Nsamba jumped into the swimming pool.
According to police, the deceased’s body was found at the pool on Monday, August 4.
According to Owoyesigyire, Police personnel in Mbalala and Mukono upon getting the report immediately, visited the scene and observed the CCTV camera footage before they conveyed the body to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem.
“We await the postmortem report as we continue to analyse the CCTV footage,” added police.
School speaks out:
Davis Kafumbe, the principal of Seeta High Schools, in a statement released on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, indicated that the incident occurred when some of the Senior Six students returning from an exciting football match decided to run to and dive into the school swimming pool.
“Unauthorised and outside the known swimming regulations of the school, the group jumped into the swimming pool. Unknown to the school administration, one of our male students unfortunately drowned,” the statement reads in part.
Additionally, Kafumbe reported that the student’s passing was not known immediately to them until after a roll call established that he was missing. School security mounted a search and later called in police for reinforcement.
The statement further reads, “A wider joint search was conducted in the presence of both parents of the missing student. It was found that he had drowned in the swimming pool. The body was recovered by police and taken to the City mortuary. The school sadly regrets this unfortunate event and greatly commiserates with the parents, the family, and the entire school community," he added.
Meanwhile, Police revealed that the school swimming pool has been closed for further police investigations.
