Speaker Oboth wants MPs at forefront of PLU registration drive

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth has said Members of Parliament should take centre stage in the collection of signatures to endorse Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba's presidential bid in 2031.
He said MPs, as chairpersons of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in their constituencies, should take a leading role in mobilising support for the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), led by the Commander of Defence Forces (CDF).
Oboth, a member of the PLU Central Executive Committee, made the remarks while dispatching registration books to Tororo District Members of Parliament on September 27, 2026.

Similarly, Tororo County NRM leaders on Monday launched online and sub-county registration of signatures to endorse Gen. Muhoozi.

Speaking during the programme's rollout, the chairperson of the Tororo County NRM district branch office, Godfrey Othieno Otabong, said they strongly support the principles of the PLU, led by Gen. Kainerugaba, particularly on accountability and efforts to fight corruption by public officers.
"We are aware that you are a serving army officer who is not allowed to take part in partisan roles, but we, the people of Tororo, do request you to offer yourself for the presidency when President Museveni retires from politics," Otabong said.
Otabong said PLU, as a civic organisation mounting pressure for effective service delivery within the NRM, is preparing party leaders for a smooth transfer of power from the President, with Muhoozi being the "standby generator".
The registration exercise across all subcounties is being coordinated by Daniel Edwards Arionga, who played a cardinal role in wooing opposition members to join the NRM party during the last general election, after meeting President Museveni in December 2015 at State House, Nakasero.
