Parliament Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has congratulated the people of Tooro on the coronation of the new king, Edward Rukiidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo.

Oboth described the new reign as the opening of a fresh chapter in the history of the kingdom.

Speaking during plenary, Oboth said the coronation was not only a celebration of new leadership but also a reaffirmation of the continuity of Tooro’s cherished cultural institution.

“I want to congratulate the people of Tooro on the coronation of His Majesty Nyabongo. This marks the beginning of a new chapter in the kingdom’s history and the continuation of a valued cultural institution,” Oboth said.

The Speaker wished the new king wisdom and strength as he assumes the mantle of leadership, urging that his reign be characterised by peace and unity.

“I wish His Majesty wisdom, strength and a reign marked by peace and unity. For the people of Tooro, we pray for continued prosperity,” Oboth said.

The coronation comes against the backdrop of deep grief following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Rukidi IV, who died in Dallas, United States, on August 27 at the age of 34.

King Oyo had been at the helm of the kingdom since 1995, when he was enthroned when he was just three years old. Oyo's enthronement followed the death of his father, Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

Oyo's death plunged the kingdom into mourning and set in motion a transition that has now ushered in King Nyabongo.

Nyabongo was officially coronated yesterday (September 19) as the new king of Tooro during a colourful ceremony held at Karuziika Palace in Fort-Port city. President Yoweri Museveni was the chief guest during the coronation ceremony.

Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi acknowledged the pain still being felt in Tooro, but noted that grief must be accompanied by continuity in leadership.

“I commiserate with the people of Tooro. Even though there is still grief, there has to be continuity. We congratulate them on the new leadership,” Ssenyonyi said.

The remarks reflect the delicate moment facing the kingdom — one in which mourning and renewal have converged.
