KAMPALA - Speaker Anita Among’s bodyguard, identified as Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, has been apprehended in connection with the shooting of a yet-to-be-identified female driver.
Police say the April 30, 2026, shooting took place near the Speaker’s residence in Nakasero, Kampala, at about midday. However, some reports indicate that Speaker Among was in Bukedea district at the time of the shooting.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the arrest, saying the victim was driving a Toyota Harrier registration number UBQ 138A, along MacKinnon Road.
“We confirm a suspected shooting which allegedly resulted in the injury of a person. We have picked up interest, and investigations are ongoing as we trace for the victim,” Kawala said.
Police have also seized the firearm that was reportedly used by the speaker’s guard in the shooting.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bodyguard first engaged in a verbal exchange with the female driver, for an as-yet-unestablished reason.
As part of the investigations, other guards have been interrogated and are expected to write their statements in a bid to ascertain what exactly sparked the shooting of an unarmed female driver.
The incident happened at a time when Police were still probing a similar shooting that took place near the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.
However, Police Constable Charles Bahati, who allegedly opened fire at a truck driver, Julius Ssemwaka, is still on the run.
