Six cousins from the Eling clan in the Lango sub-region have been punished after elders found that they had engaged in incest.

Each of the six was fined sh150,000 and a goat after clan leaders concluded that they had been involved in sexual relationships among themselves, a practice that is taboo in Lango culture.

They were identified as Gerald Oruru, 25, Tabica Akello, 23, Fred Okello, 25, Irene Akello, 21, Jasper Olomo, 19, and Immaculate Acan, 18, all residents of Adyeda parish in Aduku subcounty.

Tom Oruru, the Eling sub-clan chief in charge of Iwal parish in Atongtidi subcounty, said the individuals were apprehended during a raid at their homes following two weeks of surveillance.

He explained that the operation was launched after it emerged that the cousins were involved in sexual relationships, an act strongly forbidden within the clan.

Oruru added that the cousins had engaged in the incestuous acts in secrecy for more than two years before the matter came to light.

As part of the customary punishment, they were subjected to heavy fines and later flogged during a cleansing ritual intended to protect them from what elders believe could be generational curses.

Meanwhile, Michael Oruru, the Eling clan minister in charge of cultural affairs, said the clan continues to receive numerous reports of incest.

He attributed the vice to negligence by clan leaders and parents.
