KAMPALA - Police in Kampala are holding a private security guard who allegedly shot and killed a hotel guest after mistaking him for a thief at Ernet Hotel along William Street.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, November 12, 2025, at about 12:20 am, when the guard, identified as Isaac Aliyo, attached to PRK Security Company Limited, reportedly opened fire on Jacob Amanio, a Congolese national, at the hotel gate.
According to police, Aliyo mistook the deceased for a suspected intruder and fired a fatal shot.
He was immediately arrested, and the rifle, number 56-210249165, loaded with five rounds of ammunition, was recovered as an exhibit.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and scene of crime officers visited the scene and documented the incident under reference SD 02/12/11/2025.
Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances under which the shooting occurred, including whether the guard followed standard operating procedures before using his firearm.
Police officer shoots four
In a separate incident, police in Kwania district have launched investigations into a case of attempted murder after a senior police officer allegedly shot and injured four people during a bar quarrel in Aduku Town Council.
The incident, which took place on September 7, 2025, at about 5:00 am, happened at Bruno’s Bar and Night Club in Aduku township cell, Teduka ward. The case is registered under reference Kwania CRB 319/2025.
Police identified the suspect as Superintendent of Police (SP) Moses Muhindo, the Officer in Charge of Kwania Police Station, and a resident of Alany Cell, Teduka Ward.
Investigators say the officer picked a quarrel with another person before drawing his pistol and firing several rounds, injuring four bystanders.
The victims were identified as Lusano Alani (27), Jasper Oguta (31), Solomon Opio (24), and Steven Obote (24), all residents of Aduku and surrounding sub-counties.
The four sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and thighs and were rushed to Aduku Health Centre IV before being referred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.
The Acting District CID Officer, Tom Alfred Ocan, led a team of homicide and forensic experts who examined and photographed the scene, recorded statements, and recovered the firearm used, a pistol number UG POL 15-CN 022923 51648, which still contained four bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber. The weapon has been kept as an exhibit.
