The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) and Internal Security Organisation (ISO) have said they will probe the fraudulent acquisition of title by a developer and subsequent approval of the development plan of a petrol station in Tororo District.

This among many other issues which included neglect of duty among civil servants and corruption, emerged in the Bukedi sub-region as the State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Beatrice Akello Akori, toured the area in the company of SHACU and ISO.

SHACU in a statement released Wednesday, March 13, noted that they commenced the monitoring exercise on March 10, 2024, in the Bukedi sub-region to ensure that government projects are being implemented and are beneficial to the residents.

“There was an illegal construction of a petrol station and encroachment on the road reserve adjacent to the land of Standard Gauge Railway services, however, it was understood that there was fraudulent acquisition of title by the developer and approval by municipal staff which is yet to be investigated further,” the statement said.

The statement noted that among the 10 districts to be monitored, the team started with Tororo District and Municipality and checked on projects including Maliri Parish Development Model (PDM) Savings and Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCO) in Merikiti Sub-County where 121 persons have benefitted with 95 receiving sh1M each and 26 receiving sh500,000 each.

The statement noted that the other projects visited are the upgrade of Kamuli Health Centre II to III where the team observed the absconding and neglect of duty by staff and drug stock out.

Additionally, the construction of Tororo High Court was found well-managed and being supervised by a team from the Judiciary headed by the registrar.

The team noted that they will be proceeding to other districts in the sub-region which include Busia, Tororo, Budaka, Kibuku, Pallisa and Butaleja.

The team is currently in Butaleja.
