JINJA - Brig. Gen Henry Isoke, the head of State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), has said corruption in healthcare doesn’t just steal medicine; it steals lives and the future of our nation.

Isoke said this on Thursday as he held an interactive engagement on the fight against corruption with 404 staff and students of Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery who have been undergoing a patriotism and mindset change training, organised by the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps Uganda.

SHACU, in a statement released on Friday, said during his interaction with the medical students, Brig Gen Isoke urged them to uphold patriotism and mindset change as key weapons against corruption.

He emphasised that patriotism in the health sector is not just about talk but a daily discipline seen through integrity, empathy, discipline, and teamwork in service to patients.

“Every honest act of care is an act of patriotism,” he said. The General also quoted President H.E. Yoweri K. Museveni's urging that every citizen must "fight corruption wherever you are, fight for your portion."

Brig Gen Isoke also called for a mindset transformation, reminding the health workers that corruption starts with individual choices. He urged them to uphold the values of accountability, stewardship, and professionalism.

In spite of continued reports of corruption in a number of government institutions, including within the health sector, He observed that government has done a lot in improving health services in the country, including expanding ICU capacity, reducing maternal deaths, enabling a sharp drop in mother-to-child HIV transmission and mortality rate.

He urged the student nurses and midwives to prepare to do their part in the fight against corruption where they will be employed.

He also thanked the Commissioner, National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, Hellen Seku and her team for their efforts to promote patriotism among the youth in the country.

The General was welcomed by Mebra Mulabiza, the Institution's Principal; Madina Zalwango,  Principal Officer in charge of higher institutions, National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps; and Waiswa Zawayo, Co-ordinator Patriotism, Iganga.
