Secure documents to be printed locally

The Uganda Security Printing Company (USPC) is set to start printing Uganda’s secure documents locally, a move expected to ease access to vital documentation for Ugandans.
Hajji Abdul Nsubuga of USPC, which prints National Identification cards, said the company was given security features by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) to enable it to produce secure identity documents. He said the National ID cards have more than 20 security features embedded in seven layers, making them difficult to duplicate. “We have also constructed a state-of-the-art factory, the first of its kind in Africa, to print such documents here in Uganda,” he said.

He said the National ID cards have more than 20 security features embedded in seven layers, making them difficult to duplicate. “We have also constructed a state-of-the-art factory, the first of its kind in Africa, to print such documents here in Uganda,” he said.
Nsubuga said the facility will also print security documents and stickers for institutions such as the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), as well as education certificates, land titles and ballot papers. He said the company plans to print local currency in the future and also provide secure-document printing services for neighbouring countries. David Wanyara, the business development officer at USPC, said the company will also print driving permits, passports and other secure documents. The development is expected to strengthen Uganda’s capacity to produce sensitive documents locally while reducing reliance on external printing services.
