Police in Kassanda District have recovered the body of a woman, who went missing after an aggravated robbery attack that claimed the life of her husband in Lukira Village, Myanzi Sub-county.
The body of the deceased, identified as Regina Mariza, was found on July 8, 2026, partially buried in a garden in the neighbouring Kyaseta Village, five days after the deadly attack.
According to the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, unknown robbers attacked the residence of Joseph Ssali, 48, and his wife on the night of July 2, 2026. The couple was staying at the home of their employer, only identified as Lukwago, where they were taking care of his garden and livestock.
“On the morning of July 3, neighbours woke up to find Lukwago’s cows wandering in their gardens. They informed the area chairperson, prompting a search for the couple,” Kigozi said.
The chairperson of Lukira village, Sulaiman Kakinda, mobilised residents and proceeded to the home where the couple lived.
“When we reached the residence, we found the house broken into with signs of a struggle and blood stains around the compound,” Kakinda said.
Residents followed the trail of blood into a nearby coffee garden where they discovered the body of Ssali lying in a pool of blood.
Police investigations indicate that the attackers used both sharp and blunt objects, suspected to be a panga and a hammer, to kill the victims.
“A homicide team from Kassanda Police visited the scene and commenced investigations immediately after receiving the report,” Kigozi explained.
Preliminary findings revealed that the assailants robbed the victims of money and seven sacks of coffee before fleeing. Police believe the attackers also abducted Mariza from the scene.
“The motive appeared to go beyond economic gain because one of the victims was taken away after the robbery. Our findings further indicate that the suspects used motorcycles to access and leave the scene,” Kigozi said.
Police deployed a sniffer dog at the crime scene, but it was unable to trace the suspects due to delays in reporting the incident.
Since the attack, police and residents had been conducting an intensive search for the missing woman.
“On July 8, 2026, at about 7:30 am, residents discovered the body of Mariza in Kyaseta village. The body was in a decomposing state and had been partially buried in a garden,” Kigozi added.
He condemned the brutal killings and assured the public that efforts to apprehend those responsible are ongoing.
“Everything possible is being done by our detectives to identify and arrest the suspects behind this horrific act, which has caused fear and grief among residents of Lukira village and the entire Kassanda District,” he said.
By press time, no arrests had been made, and investigations were still underway.
