A fire outbreak at Kaka Memorial Primary School in Kiganda Town Council, Kassanda District, on Thursday evening destroyed students' property worth millions.
The incident occurred at around 6:50 p.m. on July 2, when a dormitory at the school located in Kaka Zone caught fire under unclear circumstances.
A joint force of the Uganda Police Force and residents overpowered the flames after a successful battle that lasted several hours, preventing extensive damage to the school property.
“A report was received by the OC Kiganda Police Station, who quickly mobilised personnel and responded to the scene. They joined community members who were already doing everything within their means to contain the fire,” Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, has revealed.
Witnesses reported that police officers worked with the civilian force using buckets, saucepans, jerrycans, sand, and other available materials to extinguish the flames before they could spread to other structures.
“Through the collective efforts of the police and the community, the fire was successfully contained, saving the dormitory building and other pupils’ property from extensive destruction,” Kigozi added.
Police confirmed no injuries were reported during the incident, easing fears among parents and guardians.
“To parents with children at the school, there is no cause for panic. No loss of life or injuries were registered. Only some scholastic materials and clothing belonging to pupils were destroyed,” SSP Kigozi explained.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire, while the assessment of the exact value of the damaged property is still ongoing.
“We applaud the people of Kiganda for their timely response to this fire incident. Their cooperation and quick action greatly helped in containing the situation,” Kigozi noted.
He also urged the public to actively respond to emergencies rather than waiting for authorities to arrive.
“We appeal to the public not to relax during such incidents, waiting for police response, which may sometimes be delayed due to challenges such as distance. Community action can save lives and property,” he emphasised.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
