KANUNGU - Police say they are investigating a Kanungu district fatal domestic confrontation in which a 51-year-old man was killed during a fight with his estranged wife on Tuesday (November 18, 2025) afternoon.

Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, describing it as a “violent domestic altercation that tragically resulted in the death of the husband.”

According to Maate, the victim, Spiriano Ngambeki, died instantly after a physical fight with his former wife, Dinavance Nzabaruntume, 48, at her home in Group Farm B Cell, Kibimbiri parish, at about 2:00pm on November 18, 2025.

Police say the couple had long separated after producing children, with Ngambeki relocating to Kebisoni in Rukungiri district, where he married another woman, while Nzabaruntume remained at their former marital home, taking care of a young grandchild.

On the day of the incident, Ngambeki reportedly travelled to Kanungu with his second wife but left her in Kibimbiri trading centre before proceeding alone to check on his former spouse.

Moments after he arrived, Maate said, an intense fight broke out behind the house, during which both parties sustained severe injuries.

Ngambeki succumbed on the spot.

Realising that her former husband had died, Nzabaruntume allegedly phoned her father-in-law, Benon, asking him to come and pick up his child.

When Benon reached home, he found Ngambeki's body lying near the back doorway and immediately raised an alarm, drawing neighbours who apprehended the suspect as she attempted to flee.

Police arrested the suspect and documented the crime scene. Investigators recovered clothes believed to belong to the deceased, which had been dumped in a pit latrine after the body was reportedly washed and redressed.

The body was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for post-mortem examination, while the suspect, who also suffered a deep head cut during the fight, was taken for treatment under Police guard.
