Rev. Akanjuna to be installed as new Kigezi Diocese Bishop

Rev. Canon Gaddie Akanjuna  will be consecrated and enthroned as the 6th Bishop of Kigezi Diocese, the minister of state for trade and Industry, David Bahati, who is the chairman organizing committee,  has confirmed.

Akanjuna  will succeed Rev. Canon George Bagamuhunda who announced his early retirement in May last year.

The conceration is slated for March 29, 2022, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Bugarama, playground.

In a press briefing at   All Saints' Cathedral, Kampala Bahati said “President Yoweri Museveni will be the chief guest, also the clergy, politicians, the public have been invited to attend,”

“We want to welcome the new Bishop and his wife; however, we appeal to our Kigezi people to join us on 29th and celebrate together, we are thankful for the cooperation we have had with the church and the state,” he added.

Bahati said that apart from the installation of the new Bishop, the diocese will also celebrate the cooperation it has always had with the government through revival on education, health, and economic development. 

He also praised Bagamuhunda for the enormous contribution he made to the diocese through various projects like helping orphans, setting up the institute for the nurses, and Revival Radio that enhanced the spreading of the gospel during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Bahati was accompanied by Rev Cannon Charles Tukacungurwa (All Saints' Cathedral, Kampala) Jessica Tushemerirwe chairperson representing Kigezi Diocese, and also members Dorcus Twesogomwe, Alice Bongyeirwe Turiho secretary to the committee were in attendance.

Alice Bongyeirwe, secretary, of the organizing committee said it’s no wonder there is a saying ‘Behind every successful man, is a strong woman’.

She attributed the bishop’s success toMaama Chris Bagamuhunda, the wife to Bagamuhunda for her tremendous work in empowering women in the mother’s union at the diocese and her tireless effort in supporting her husband.

About Bagamuhunda

In August 2013, Bagamuhunda was elected the fifth bishop of Kigezi Diocese by the House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda.

Since 2010, Bagamuhunda has served as the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda.

Prior to that, he served as the coordinator of the Provincial Planning, Development, and Rehabilitation (PDR) department. From 1992 to 2007 he served as the director of the Kigezi diocese’s water department.  Under his leadership, the department received a number of distinctions and awards.

He has also served as chaplain at schools and a tutor at Bishop Barham divinity school in Kabale.

Canon Bagamuhunda has been chairing Kigezi diocese’s House of Clergy for eight years and is also chairman of the diocese clergy pension fund.

He is board chairman of the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau and also serves on the Uganda Christian University council and also serves on the boards of World Vision, Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, Uganda Joint Christian Council, GO Project-Africa, and the Water School.

He has also served as chaplain at schools and a tutor at Bishop Barham divinity school in Kabale.  Bagamuhunda has been chairing the Kigezi diocese’s House of Clergy for eight years and is also chairman of the diocese clergy pension fund.
