“There is no way you can be respected in your family if you have more than one wife with different children even if you give them whatever it takes to grow well,” he said.

The North Kigezi diocesan Bishop, Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has asked married couples to desist from using Biblical verses on Old Testament kings’ polygamous marriages to justify the practice since they too regretted marrying many women.

Bishop Asiimwe asked married couples to instead preserve their love for their families and mentor children towards proper family unions that would lead to many liking the institution of marriage that is at threat from breakups and lack of mutual respect.

“There is no way you can be respected in your family if you have more than one wife with different children even if you give them whatever it takes to grow well,” he said.

Asiimwe said they should learn from past experiences of those who had more than one wife compared to the single wife and husband.

The Bishop was on Friday, December 29, preaching at the wedding of Dr Hannington Mwesigwa at All Saints Nyakariro Church of Uganda in Bugangari Archdeaconry, North Kigezi Diocese in Rukungiri District.

He said that while kings like David and Solomon had many wives, King David in his proverbs said all was vanity as he lacked enjoyment and Solomon noted that it was a wastage even when he had 1000 wives meaning the ones marrying two or three are even in more vanity.

Asiimwe asked relatives of the married couples to stop intervening in marriages and also the married to stop listening to third parties if they want successful unions.

Dr Mwesigwa is the son of the former Kanungu District Health Officer, Can. Florence Rwabahima, a member of the diocesan synod of North Kigezi Diocese.
