A 12-year-old pupil has died, and four others were injured after a school building wall collapsed during lunch break at Rwerere SDA Nursery and Primary School in Rukungiri district.
The incident occurred on April 15, 2026, when a violent windstorm destroyed one of the school’s walls, which fell onto five pupils having their lunch on the building’s verandah at around 1:30pm. Princess Ashaba died while being rushed to hospital.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, said the incident should serve as a warning to schools with similar weak structures.
"The fact that the building which fell had weak walls should be an eye opener to many other schools that have the same, to avoid endangering lives of innocent school children," Maate said.
The four injured pupils; Emmanuel Abisnguza, 8, Treasure Azahura, 7, Mercy Ainembabazi, 10, and Onesmus Mugarura, 8, were taken to Kambuga Hospital for treatment.
Police visited and documented the scene, and the body was taken to Buyanja Health Centre IV for postmortem examination. A death inquiry file has been opened.
