Police officer dies in motorcycle crash in Yumbe

A police officer has died following a motorcycle crash in Yumbe district, with a passenger sustaining injuries and receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Wilfred Egwuyu, 44, a health worker attached to Arua City Police Health Centre III and a student at Arua Institute of Health Sciences, was riding from Yumbe town towards Kuru Hospital when the incident occurred at about 8:15 pm on April 16, 2026, in Manduru cell, Ombe ward.

Collins Asea, the North West Nile Region Police spokesperson, said the motorcycle's stand, which had not been properly folded, struck the ground, causing the rider to lose control.

"The deceased sustained a head injury and lost consciousness. He was rushed to Kuru Hospital by well-wishers but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival," Asea said.

The passenger, Geoffrey Ambayo, 34, also a student at the same institution and a resident of Okuli in Kuru Town Council, was taken to hospital and found to be in stable condition.

The white Yamaha motorcycle, registration number UEM 378W, was initially kept by the local area council before being retrieved and parked at Kuru Police Station pending inspection.

Traffic officers, led by investigators from Arua city, visited the scene and documented their findings. The body was examined by the regional police surgeon and transported to Arua city for further processing.

Police said the cause of the accident remains under investigation, with statements collected from the victim, hospital administrators and eyewitnesses.
