President supports 42 families affected by Gulu road crash with sh102m

President Yoweri Museveni has supported 42 families affected by the road accident that claimed 15 lives and left over 40 injured along the Gulu-Kampala highway with sh102m.


The support was delivered by the Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Lillian Aber, to the 42 affected families on Saturday at the office of the Gulu City Mayor, Julius Acire Labeja.

Also present were Bardege-Layibi division MP Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, and the Commander of the 4th Infantry Division, Maj. Gen. Felix Busizori.

On July 7, 2026, at around 9:30pm, a fatal road crash happened at Bobi trading centre along the Kampala–Gulu Highway involving motor vehicle UBE 110H, an Isuzu bus belonging to Opit Travelers Company coming from Kampala to Gulu City, and motor vehicle KBS 564D/ZE 7948, a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer from South Sudan to Kampala.

According to reports from police, the driver of the bus, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road and lost control of the vehicle. This resulted into a head-on collision with the oncoming trailer, leaving 15 dead and over 40 others injured.

The injured victims were rushed to various medical facilities in Gulu city for treatment.

While handing over the money to the affected families, minister Aber said President Museveni extended financial support of sh5m to each of the families that lost their loved ones to cater for burial expenses, and sh1m to each of the families of the injured passengers to assist with medical expenses.

She said affected families who were not present during the handover of the money can go and pick their money from the Mayor of Gulu City.

Aber said information they got indicated that 41 passengers got injured in the accident, but according to the list from the Regional Internal Security Officer, 27 passengers got injured and three were discharged from the hospital.

She thanked the President for the compassionate gesture, describing the support as a demonstration of the Government's commitment to stand with citizens during times of tragedy.
