President Museveni warns opposition against impunity

The President said the arrest of opposition leaders like Dr Kizza Besigye in 2024 is not a regression of what happened in the past, but a fight against impunity, adding that such leaders are taken to court for trial.

President Yoweri Museveni has decried the impunity by opposition leaders, saying he will not allow them to threaten those who support the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.

He cited the attack on NRM women supporters who were forced to undress because they were dressed in yellow party T-shirts, and the attack on an unarmed female police officer, who was removing barricades from the road in Kampala during a riot a few years ago.

"Have you heard anyone condemning these actions? I have not heard anyone condemning these acts of impunity," the President said while addressing the nation on issues of national importance at State House Entebbe today evening.

He said the state opposes bail for opposition leaders because such leaders threaten witnesses.

"The arrested opposition leaders are not getting bail because they threaten the safety of witnesses," he said.

The President said the arrest of opposition leaders like Dr Kizza Besigye in 2024 is not a regression of what happened in the past, but a fight against impunity, adding that such leaders are taken to court for trial.

"Therefore, those bringing slogans like bizeemu (bad things of the past are back) are wrong because then those who would be arrested would be killed and have their bodies dumped in Namanve or River Nile. But today, those arrested are produced before court. So, that can't be a repeat of what happened in the past," he said.

Museveni was responding to concerns by the Inter Religious Council of Uganda that the recent arrests of opposition leaders was a regression of what happened in the past.

Museveni said he cannot allow impunity in security forces as well, citing the killing of boxer Zebra Mando in Kawempe, which he said he sorted when he intervened and called his family members to State House.
