KAMPALA - The Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has warned the public about a rising trend in crime, specifically aimed at unsuspecting bus passengers.
KMP spokesperson Patrick Onyango says the Police have received numerous complaints concerning deceptive practices directed at those travelling by bus.
“Impostors posing as agents for various bus companies are operating in taxi stages and outside bus terminals, primarily targeting travelers heading upcountry,” he noted in a statement released on March 11, 2025.
Investigations indicate that scammers have been producing fake receipts that are distinct from genuine bus company receipts.
Onyango reported that the police have so far arrested and charged five individuals for obtaining money by false pretence.
He said in partnership with bus operators, the Police have taken steps to curb further fraud, such as eliminating unauthorised offices and desks along streets, and ensuring that all ticket sales occur exclusively at official bus company locations.
“A targeted operation has been launched to apprehend individuals involved in this practice,” he added.
The Police urge the public to exercise caution and only purchase tickets directly from authorised bus company offices, and avoid street vendors.
He also asked the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately.
