The Police have launched a probe after a newly born female twin was stolen from Koboko Hospital.
Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, said the incident at Koboko Hospital where the baby was reported stolen, has prompted an investigation by the North West Nile Territorial Police and Koboko Central Police Station.
"The incident, which occurred on March 29, 2024, around 8:00 pm, was only brought to the attention of authorities five days later, on April 3, 2024," Enanga said.
Details gathered reveal that Afekum Baifa gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, via caesarean section on March 20, 2024, at approximately 9:40 am.
According to Enanga, her sister-in-law Beatrice Chandiru, a 47-year-old local resident, was assisting her during the delivery process.
During a moment when Baifa was asleep, Chandiru was called away by Jelly Drateru, a midwife, to attend to a task outside the room.
"Upon her return, she discovered the female twin missing. Despite extensive searches conducted both within the hospital premises and the surrounding neighbourhood, the baby remained untraceable until the parents, Richard Asiku and Afekum Baifa, reported the incident to the authorities on April 3," Enanga said while addressing the press on Monday.
Preliminary police findings indicate that perpetrators often target maternity wards, preying on exhausted mothers, particularly those who have undergone caesarean sections.
"By gaining the trust of either the mother or her attendant, these criminals seize the opportunity to snatch newborns while their caregivers are momentarily distracted," Enanga said.
