Police probe murder by stabbing at BMK plaza in Kampala

Detectives in Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) are investigating a murder by stabbing incident that occurred at the ground floor of BMK Plaza in Kampala on July 10.

In a statement today, Luke Owoyesigyire, the KMP deputy spokesperson, said preliminary findings indicate that a confrontation arose between a security guard and a male hawker after the latter was asked to leave the building on July 10, 2026, at around 4:30pm. 

“The altercation turned violent, during which the security guard allegedly stabbed the hawker in the chest. The victim collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire revealed that the suspect, identified as Ian Mugisha, a security guard attached to Security 2000, was arrested immediately.

“The suspected murder weapon was recovered, and the body of the deceased, whose identity is yet to be established, was conveyed to the Kampala Capital City Authority City Mortuary for post-mortem examination,” Owoyesigyire noted.

He said police have commenced investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Crime statistics

While releasing the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025 in April this year, the Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba said a total of 196,405 cases were reported to Police compared to 218,715 cases reported in 2024. Out of the reported cases, 115,301 were submitted to the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions from which 79,291 were taken to Court.

Out of the 32 policing regions in Uganda, Kampala Metropolitan Police South registered the highest number of cases (13,950), followed by Rwizi with 13,416 cases. Kampala Metropolitan Police North followed with 13,340 cases, North Kyoga had 12,728 cases, while Kampala Metropolitan Police East registered 10,388 cases. At district/divisional level, Wakiso Police Division registered the highest number of cases (3,177), followed by Luweero Police Station with 3,123 cases. Mukono Police Division followed with 2,880 cases, Tororo Police Station registered 2,831 cases, while Ntungamo Police Station had 2,825 cases.
