Police in Kampala register fire outbreak and probe murder case

A fire outbreak in Kireka Central Zone, Wakiso district, is one of the incidents registered by Kampala Metropolitan Police on Sunday (September 28).

The blaze that was reported late Saturday destroyed three rooms belonging to the gender ministry after a cooking gas cylinder was reportedly left unattended.

No deaths or injuries were recorded, according to reference SD 02/27/09/2025.

In February this year,  the director of Fire and Rescue Services, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Stephen Tanui, revealed that a 13.8% rise in fire incidents was recorded between 2023 and 2024. The cases increased from 1,104 in 2023 to 1,280 in 2024. 

Of those, 1,150 were successfully handled, 120 were contained before the fire brigade’s arrival, and 10 turned out to be false alarms.

At the time, Police said that 67% of the fires were reported between 6am and 12pm.

Most cases were in residential buildings (300) and makeshift structures (250). Notably, school fires rose by 9%, from 50 cases in 2023 to 55 in 2024. 

On Saturday, detectives in Masulita, Wakiso district, responded to a suspected murder case at Lwemedde, recorded under SD 09/27/09/2025 at Lwemedde Police Post. The scene of crime officers combed the area.

In the early hours of Sunday, just after 4am, 4:20am, Police officers rescued a man accused of simple robbery from an angry mob.

He
was safely transferred to Kabalagala Police Post for further management.

Police said the central business district was generally peaceful on Sunday, with a total of 703 suspects of various crimes in different police custodial facilities.
