Police have urged the public to exercise caution during heavy downpours, warning parents to keep children away from fast-flowing water and flooded drainage channels following the death of a five-year-old boy, who drowned in Mubende Municipality, Mubende district.
Ronnie Thadeus Prosper, a pupil at Kasumba Nursery and Primary School, was swept away by fast running water at about 8:00am on October 17, 2026, while playing with his elder brother in Kibaati Cell, East Division within Mubende Municipality.
According to police, the boy’s elder brother ran back home and alerted their auntie, who mobilised neighbours to search for Prosper.
A report was made at Mubende Central Police Station by Godfrey Okodi, a staff member of Biyinzika Poultry farm in Mubende.
Officers from the Mubende District Police Command, including a homicide team, joined residents in the search. The boy’s body was later recovered from a pool of water in the nearby Kabasojo village.
Police examined and documented the scene before taking the body to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination. Witness statements were also recorded.
Wamala regional police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi warned that playing in running water during heavy rainfall exposes children to the risk of being swept away and drowning in drainage channels. "There is also the danger of lightning strikes during storms," he noted.
Kigozi urged parents and guardians to closely supervise children during rainy seasons and keep them away from flooded areas and fast-flowing water.
