Police in Mukono are holding six Senior Four students of Bishop Senior School who allegedly set fire to a school dormitory during a student demonstration.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest of the students, who had just completed their UCE examinations.

Onyango said that about a week ago, the unnamed students led a strike during which they burnt the school dormitory. However, he noted that the grievances which prompted the act were not disclosed.

He added that other students and teachers managed to put out the fire, after which investigations into those responsible began.

Since the suspects were S4 finalists sitting their examinations, Onyango explained that the school administration chose not to disrupt the process.

The matter was therefore held off until the conclusion of the exams, after which the suspects were handed over to the police on Monday, November 3.

“A case of arson has been opened against them, and prosecution will begin as soon as investigations are completed,” he said.

When contacted for comment, the headteacher of Bishop Senior School, Robert Kyakulaga, declined to discuss the matter and promised to return the reporter’s call with more information.
