A total of 2,334 suspected criminals have been arrested during security operations conducted over the past two weeks in the Kampala Metropolitan Policing (KMP) area.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said the figures reflect ongoing enforcement and screening processes across different parts of Kampala.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Kituuma said the arrests were part of routine operations aimed at addressing various criminal activities, but emphasised that not all those detained were found culpable.

“We made 2,334 arrests, but not all these people we arrest are guilty,” Kituuma said.

He explained that after arrest, suspects undergo screening, after which decisions are made to either release them on caution or on police bonds. Others, Kituuma added, are taken to court depending on the available evidence.

According to Kituuma, 505 suspects were cautioned and released after investigators established that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with prosecution.

He added that 164 suspects were released on police bond, allowing them temporary freedom as investigations continue.

Kituuma further stated that 1,350 suspects were taken to court after police determined that there was “cogent evidence” linking them to various offences.

He noted that 307 cases remain pending before courts of law, adding that judicial outcomes will be communicated by the relevant authorities.

“We will not go into the statistics of what happened in courts of law. These will be communicated by the relevant authorities,” he said.

Kituuma emphasised that the figures reflect the structured legal process followed by police, where suspects are subjected to assessment before decisions are made on prosecution.

The police spokesperson said the operations will continue as part of broader efforts to maintain law and order across the country.
