Senior presidential advisor on political affairs and mobilisation Haji Abdul Nadduli, has made a passionate appeal to President Yoweri Museveni to release political prisoners as a gesture of national reconciliation and forgiveness as the country celebrates this year’s Heroes Day.
Nadduli, a former war bush fighter, said many of the political prisoners, currently languishing in jail, contributed to the liberation struggle in one way or another.
Speaking during a press conference at his home in Luweero on Tuesday (June 09), the veteran politician said religious teachings call for mercy to those imprisoned for political reasons.
"Let the light set on his anger so that he exercises mercy on those he imprisoned over political differences," Nadduli said.
Making reference to the Bible that calls for mercy, Nadduli added; “we should not let the sun to go down while we are still angry. I, therefore, call upon the President to act in that spirit and show mercy where it is possible.”
He said Heroes Day serves as a reminder of the life and material sacrifices that Ugandans made during the liberation struggle that brought about peace and stability, adding that this peace should be enjoyed by all Ugandans.
According to Nadduli, the sacrifices made were not in vain because they helped to deliver the country from the turmoil of the day and lay the foundation for Uganda’s current peace and development.
Nadduli called for more efforts on the part of the National Resistance Movement government while dealing with corruption, observing that some of the culprits were being handled with 'kid gloves'.
"We should move from rhetoric and take concrete action against corrupt officials. Corruption undermines service delivery. The corrupt should not only be warned, but arrested, prosecuted and sentenced," he said.
He condemned the inhumane nature in which the ongoing trade order operations are being carried out, saying traders are not given ample time to relocate or find alternative locations to operate from.
Nadduli urged the newly appointed ministers to serve the country with diligence in recognition of the fact that the authority they are exercising came through life and material sacrifices.
