President Yoweri Museveni has summoned veterans' leaders as part of an audit into the sh231 billion periodically disbursed to support veterans' wealth creation initiatives across the country.
The directive stems from a 2009 meeting between President Museveni and leaders of veterans' associations, during which it was resolved that each leader in the liberation war, together with their spouses, would receive sh5 million, while support cadres would receive sh1.5 million.
President Museveni commended liberation war veterans for their contribution to Uganda's liberation struggle, which he said laid the foundation for the country's transformation.
He made the remarks while addressing the nation during virtual Heroes Day celebrations held at State House, Nakasero on June 9, 2026, under the theme: "The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration".
The President also directed that the Operation Wealth Creation leadership, which was responsible for distributing seedlings to veterans, be included in the audit process.
Museveni further called for reforms in the management of veterans' SACCOs.

Heroes Day is observed annually on June 9 to honour Ugandans who sacrificed for the country’s liberation struggles, particularly the National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war of 1981-1986.
The day also commemorates Edidian Luttamaguzi, who was killed for supporting NRA fighters.
