Oyam District leaders have launched the rehabilitation of the 46.4-kilometre road in Oyam North and Oyam South constituencies to improve transport connectivity, ease movement, and support economic activities among residents on Friday, October 30, 2026.

The road rehabilitation project, estimated to cost sh676,375,300, is expected to be completed within one month. It will involve cleaning, reshaping, gravelling, and drainage works to improve the road’s condition and make it more accessible to road users.

The Minister for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President, Santa Alum Ogwang, said the launch of the road rehabilitation marks another step towards improving local road infrastructure in Oyam District, with the success of the project expected to depend on the quality of work delivered and proper maintenance after completion.

Eng. Peter George Okite Okeng lamented that the roads in Oyam district, totalling 555 km, have not been rehabilitated in 20 years.

He disclosed this during the launch of six roads in Oyam district, comprising three roads in Oyam North: Otwal-Alibi to Lira border (10.1 km), Obangangeo to Atipe Kampala (7.2 km), and Amwa market to Ogwalmulamula (7.5 km). In Oyam South, the roads include Mairo 13 to Zambia (8.7 km), Odyek to Barlongo (6.6 km), and Alidi to Awangi (6.3 km), which is part of the sh2 billion provided by the government under the Ministry of Finance.

Patrick Ogwang Obura, the Member of Parliament representing Oyam South and chairperson of the Lango parliamentary group, said road rehabilitation is expected to address challenges associated with the road's poor condition, which can affect the movement of residents, farmers, traders, and other road users, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

He said the rehabilitation is expected to improve access to markets, health facilities, schools, and other essential services, while making it easier for farmers to transport agricultural produce to trading centres.

Eunice Apio Otuku, the Member of Parliament for the Oyam North constituency and Chairperson of the Road Committee in Oyam District, highlighted that for communities that depend on road transport for their daily livelihoods, improved road infrastructure can contribute to reduced transport difficulties, better access to economic opportunities, and stronger connections between rural communities and service centres.

Under the planned works, cleaning will help remove vegetation and other obstructions along the road, while reshaping will improve the road surface and restore its proper profile. Gravelling is expected to strengthen the surface, while drainage improvements will help control water flow and reduce erosion and damage from stagnant water.
