It has been 575 days since police constable Charles Bahati allegedly shot and killed a motorist on Sezibwa Road in Kampala before fleeing with his service rifle.
To date, Bahati remains at large despite an ongoing nationwide manhunt.
The shooting, which occurred on December 23, 2024, left Julius Ssemwaka, the driver of motor vehicle registration UAX 460C dead. Ssemwaka was shot dead following a confrontation that unfolded in a heavy evening traffic.
According to police records, Bahati abandoned the scene immediately after the shooting and escaped on a motorcycle while carrying his firearm.
More than one and a half years later, investigators are yet to apprehend the fugitive officer, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Then, eyewitnesses indicated that the incident began when Bahati ordered Ssemwaka to reverse his vehicle along the busy Sezibwa Road. However, traffic congestion behind Ssemwaka's vehicle reportedly made it impossible for him to comply.

Following the incident, Police launched a manhunt and circulated Bahati's photograph, urging members of the public to volunteer any information that could lead to his arrest.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said the force continues to treat the case as a priority.
Police have maintained that the search for Bahati remains active and appealed to anyone with credible information on the officer's whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or security agency.
