The Professional Urban Planners Association of East Africa (PUPAEA) are targeting to distribute one million green toilets in Uganda as the world celebrates World Toilet Day.

Samuel Niiwo, Executive Vice President PUPAEA, said the green toilets will be given to stressed communities such as refugee camps and their host communities, slums, and rural poor farming communities by 2030.

This year’s world toilet day will be celebrated under the theme ‘Innovation for smart cities and climate-smart agriculture towards sustainable sanitation and climate change’.

The celebration will involve launching a comprehensive 10-year effort called the Uganda Program for Sanitation and Market-led Agricultural Rural Technologies (UP-SMART).

UPSMART is a consortium project initiated by UNEDI and being promoted by both PUPAEA, NMI, and other stakeholders.

The project aims to supply and distribute 1,000,000 "Green toilet technologies" and other solutions in Uganda.

This will improve both urban and rural sanitation, ensure climate-smart agricultural productivity and create over 100,000 jobs through the green economy revolution.

The World Toilet Day celebrations will involve a symposium of 40 invited guests in a hotel which will be followed by a donation of green toilets by Nurture Model Initiatives representing Pikkuvihreä Finland to an identified sanitation stressed community.

Green toilets are environmentally friendly technologies that separate urine from solid waste.

The green toilet containers are movable, work without electricity or water. The toilets are odorless, pleasant to use, and easy to maintain. The products or compost are used as fertilizers for gardens.

PUPAEA is a network of professional urban planners and other related stakeholders from 18 countries of the East African Coastal Area.
